AMTOB elects Michael Foley, CEO of Grameenphone as President and Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, CEO & MD of Robi as Vice-President

DHAKA, March 30 (NsNewsWire) — The Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) has elected Michael Foley, Chief Executive Officer of Grameenphone, as its President. He is replacing AMTOB’s outgoing President and CEO of Banglalink Erik Aas.

Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, Managing Director and CEO of Robi has been reelected as Vice-President of the association. The association’s board meeting took place on March 28, 2018.
Micheal Foley said, “Bangladesh has made impressive advances in telecommunications and the sector has played a commendable role in the development of the economy. However, with the changes in technologies new opportunities and challenges are arising.”
He added, “AMTOB looks forward to working with the government of Bangladesh, associated regulators and the industries to set a clear strategy to address those opportunities and challenges for further development of our society and the country.”
Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said “The telecom industry is well-poised in the context of the country’s digital aspirations. With the advent of 4G technology, the country is now equipped to embrace the 4th Industrial Revolution. This calls for a fresh dialogue among the telecom industry, the customers, the business community, the civil society members and the Government.”

AMTOB is a national trade association representing all Mobile Telecom Operators in Bangladesh. Airtel, Banglalink, Citycell, Grameenphone, Robi and Teletalk – the six Mobile Network Operators are the General Members of the association and Mobile Network Solution providers Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia are its Associate Members.

AMTOB has emerged as the official voice of the Bangladesh mobile telecom industry to interact with relevant government agencies, regulators financial institutions, civil society, technical bodies, media and other national and international organizations. It provides a forum to discuss and exchange ideas between the stakeholders and industry actors for the development of mobile telecom industry through public private dialogue.

The Association, on behalf of the mobile telecom sector, has been playing a lead role in partnering with the government in realizing Digital Bangladesh objectives.

AMTOB has been at the forefront in upholding the image of the industry among its stakeholders and consumers. It regularly communicates with policy makers and industry think-tanks on the contribution of the sector for socio-economic development of the country. The association also plays a key role in enabling the inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the sector.

Mobile telecom industry is one of the largest employers of the country. The sector is also the biggest source of government’s tax revenue.

Michael Foley:
Mr. Michael Foley was appointed as Chief Executive Officer from 26 May, 2017. Before joining Grameenphone he was CEO of Telenor Bulgaria. A Canadian by birth he joined Telenor in 2014 as CEO of Telenor Pakistan. He has more than 30 years of sales, marketing and operational experience in the telecom, retail and gaming sectors from both advanced and growth markets. He is a Graduate of McGill University in Montreal with BA in Organizational Psychology.

Mahtab Uddin Ahmed:
Mahtab Uddin Ahmed is the Managing Director and CEO of Robi Axiata Limited. He succeeded Supun Weerasinghe on November 1, 2016.
He joined Robi in 2010 as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the position which he held till 2014. Prior to joining Robi, Mahtab spent 17 years of his career with Unilever where he held various business and finance leadership positions including the post of Finance Director in various operating companies like Unilever Pakistan, Unilever Arabia and Unilever Bangladesh.
Mahtab holds a Bachelor of Honours and Masters in Accounting from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is also a Fellow member of Institute of Cost and Management Accountant of Bangladesh (ICMAB), FCMA & CGMA of Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA, UK).
