At least 4 wedding guests killed as boat sinks in NE Bangladesh

DHAKA, Sept. 25 (NsNewsWire) — At least four wedding guests have been killed after a boat capsized in a wetland in northeastern Bangladesh, a police official said, reports Xinhua.
Local sources said search continued for several people missing after the incident.
The boat was carrying at least 20 wedding guests along the wetland, known as Kaliakutha haor in Sunamganj district, some 296 km northeast of capital Dhaka, on Tuesday night at about 7:00 p.m. local time when it overturned in inclement weather, Sunamganj’s Derai Police Station Officer in charge KM Nazrul Islam told media.
“There were some 20 people on the boat when the disaster occurred and many saved their lives by swimming to the shore,” he said.
“We’ve come to know that locals retrieved bodies of four children,” Islam added but could not confirm how many people remain unaccounted for.
Ferry and boat disasters are common in Bangladesh, which is crisscrossed by hundreds of rivers and wetlands. Boat and ferry are still a key means of transport in the country, and most of them are often overcrowded.  Enditem
