Bangladesh love for Bhupenda overwhelms state artists

GUWAHATI: The team of 32 artists from the state, which participated in a two-day programme to celebrate the birth anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika in Bangladesh, said it was overwhelmed by the love and adulation the Assam icon inspired in the neighbouring country, reports TNN.

On Tuesday, the team shared their experience in Bangladesh and said the love that Bangladesh had for Hazarika cut across generations.

During the visit, which commemorated the doyen’s 90th birth anniversary, an award titled ‘Brahmaputra Meghna Bhupen Hazarika Award’ was conferred on Ashaf Khan, a noted musician and singer from Bangladesh who shared a close relationship with Hazarika.

The team visited the country last week and the event was organised by the Assam chapter of Friends of Bangladesh, a socio-cultural organisation fostering cultural exchanges between India and Bangladesh, Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust, the cultural department of the Bangladesh government and a few other groups.

“It was such a lovely experience. It was a fitting honour for our very own Bhupen da. We were really moved on seeing the respect and devotion that the people of Bangladesh have for him. This is a cultural exchange that we should explore further. It will help bring Assam and Bangladesh closer,” said Manisha Hazarika of the Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust.

People in Bangladesh not only remembered the immortal creations of Hazarika, but were doing their best to preserve his legacy, the team said. “The new generation there is very much into Hazarika’s works. We were deeply moved and we realized that love for him was more profound there than here,” said Saumen Bharatiya, secretary of the Assam chapter of Friends of Bangladesh.

The team also received several mementoes, including Hazarika souvenirs, wood plaques and stoles with his image. “The government of Bangladesh helped us a lot. It was an experience that we didn’t anticipate,” said another member of the team.
