BRAC Distributes Mechanical Prosthetic Limbs to 12 Rana Plaza Victims

DHAKA, Nov. 23 (BRAC Press Release) — 12 victims with disability of Savar Rana Plaza tragedy received artificial limb support from BRAC Brace and limb center (BLBC) in an informal event held by BRAC today. In addition to this, BRAC provided fixed deposit of BDT 100,000 for each 12 victims as a part of long term rehabilitation support.

Following the tragic incident in Savar Rana Plaza on 24th April 2013, BRAC has been working in close collaboration with the National Institute of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation (NITOR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the leadership of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to support the victims. So far, BLBC had supported 26 patients in NITOR and delivered Taylor Braces for these patients for free.

Dr. Zulfikar Ali Lenin, Director Health, Prime Minister’s Office, Prof. Kh. Abdul Awal Rizvi, Director NITOR, Vice Chairperson of BRAC and BRAC’s senior directors were present at the event.

Appreciating the effort, Dr. Zulfikar Ali Lenin mentioned that the government took initiative to prepare a list of all victims of the Rana plaza and categorised them based on their type of injury and provided emergency healthcare support to the victims. He also mentioned that the government has taken initiatives to mitigate repetition of such incidents.

Dr. Kaosar Afsana, Director of BRAC’s health, nutrition and population programme (HNPP) mentioned that BRAC is pleased to play an important role in supporting some of the victims of the tragic incident and hoped that repetition of such incidents will not take place in the upcoming days.
