NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS

DHAKA, Sept. 13 (NsNewsWire) — The Australian High Commission’s Deputy Head of Mission Ms Penny
Morton attended the National Conference of ‘Indigenous Peoples Human Rights
Defenders’ (IPHRD) organised by the Kapaeeng Foundation. As a special guest at the
event Ms Morton said, ‘The Australian High Commission is proud to support the
IPHRD conference. In Bangladesh, the Australian Government is committed to
supporting indigenous communities through local and international non-governmental
organisations (NGOs) like the Kapaeeng Foundation, BRAC, Save the Children and
Plan International to work with indigenous communities.’
Kapaeeng Foundation, with the support of the Direct Aid Program of the
Australian High Commission, Dhaka, is implementing a project titled ‘Strengthening
the network of indigenous peoples’ human rights defenders for the promotion and
protection of land rights of indigenous peoples in Bangladesh.’ The overall objective
of the project is to contribute to enhancing respect for human rights of indigenous
peoples and combating violence against indigenous communities in Bangladesh.
Australia, a member of United Nations Human Rights Council, is committed
to providing opportunities to assist indigenous peoples — both in Australia and
overseas — to overcome social and economic disadvantage.
