Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh Hosts the Seminar on Shared Memory and Contemporary Mission: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War

On September 1, the Chinese embassy in Bangladesh hosted a seminar entitled “Shared Memory and Contemporary Mission: Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War”. Ambassador Yao Wen attended and addressed the event. More than 40 guests attended the seminar, including Mr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, deputy press secretary to the Chief Adviser; Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, former Bangladesh Advisor (Minister) of Foreign Affairs; H.E. Mahbub Uz Zaman, former Bangladesh Ambassador to China; Prof. Imtiaz Ahmed, Executive Director of the Centre for Alternatives and Professor of International Relations at the University of Dhaka; Comrade Md. Shah Alam, President of the Communist Party of Bangladesh(CPB); Mr. Saiful Haque, General Secretary of Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh, as well as representatives from political and business sectors, Confucius Institutes, mainstream media and Chinese communities in Bangladesh.

Ambassador Yao Wen stated that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. In the unprecedented struggle in human history, the Chinese people stood shoulder to shoulder with people across the world and decisively defeated fascism. It was a great victory of justice prevailing over evil, light over darkness, and progress over reactionary forces. As the main battlefield in Asia, China made a tremendous contribution to the ultimate victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. Ambassador Yao underlines that we should remember the history and honor our fallen heroes, cherish and safeguard the hard-won peace, and uphold humanity’s common values of peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy and freedom. He called on the international community to jointly resist the erroneous acts of distorting history and glorifying aggression, defend the outcomes of victory of the World War II, as well as international fairness and justice, so as to build together a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity.

The guests spoke highly of the huge sacrifice and important contribution made by China in the World Anti-Fascist War, and stressed the importance of bearing in mind the lessons of history and preventing the recurrence of fascism and historical tragedies. It is expected that China will play an even greater role in building a new international order. Former Foreign Adviser Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury noted that a correct understanding of history is the foundation for moving toward the future, and the international community should jointly uphold the post-war international order and the multilateral system. Former Bangladeshi Ambassador to China H.E. Mahbub Uz Zaman pointed out that this seminar is of great significance, which helps to enhance the understanding of history among people from all sectors and promote the everlasting friendship between the two peoples.

Mr. Han Kun, Vice President of the Chinese Enterprise Association in Bangladesh(CEAB) said that peace is the prerequisite for development, and Chinese enterprises in Bangladesh will continue to be guardians of peace and contributors to development. Mr. Zhao Shibo, Vice President of Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh reviewed the glorious history of overseas Chinese supporting the Anti-Fascist War, and stated that today’s overseas Chinese will continue to carry forward patriotism and serve as a bridge for promoting the friendship between China and Bangladesh.

The seminar was held in a solemn and engaging atmosphere. The guests had in-depth exchanges on topics including enlightenment of history and outlook for the future; multilateralism and peaceful development and so forth. The guests also watched together “The Guardians”, a short video on Chinese military’s service.
