Musical Evening at Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre on Dec. 7

Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) in association with Asian Paints, IRCON and Marico Bangladesh is organising A Musical Evening by eminent Bangladeshi Band “Joler Gaan” at 6:30 PM on December 7, 2013 at IGCC, House No. 35, Road No. 24, Gulshan-1, Dhaka.

“Joler Gaan” is a band which derives inspiration from the hundreds of rivers which flow through Bangladesh and constitute its lifeblood. The band believes that their spiritual and emotional awareness originated from water and hence, they are “Joler Gaan” meaning music of the water. The band is composed of theatre activists and “visual artists”.

The lyrics of “Joler Gaan” are based on what the band describes as “human stories” of love, despair, courage, nature and other ideas and emotions which people can identify with and relate to. They claim to use simple, yet profound language in an attempt to touch human hearts and imagination. This includes the usage of a lot of metaphors which depict various colours and shades of human emotions. Their music is very much contemporary, yet distinctive. More importantly, it is earthy and connected to the soil.

“Joler Gaan” began its musical journey in 2006 at the World Sufi Festival in Glasgow, Scotland. They subsequently performed at Royal Museum in Edinburgh, Scotland and at the London Mela in London. The band has performed all around Bangladesh in cities such as Dhaka, Sylhet, Chittagong and Khulna, and at important venues such as the Russian Cultural Center, Dhaka; Goethe Institute, Dhaka; Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Jahangirnagar University and Chhayanaut, among others. “Joler Gaan” has also collaborated with well-known French musician Abaji and the Scottish musician Colin Blakey. They have also performed in various local TV channels and Radio live shows.

“Joler Gaan” released their first album entitled “Otol joler gaan” during Pohela Boishakh in April, 2013. Their second album entitled “The Cage” is going to be released soon.
