Bangladesh truckers stage mass protests against eviction of illegal terminal

DHAKA, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) — Hundreds of Bangladeshi truckers Sunday staged mass protests against a drive to evict an illegal truck terminal in capital Dhaka‘s Tejgaon Industrial area.
Protesters set fire to tyers and piles of garbage to block a central street in Tejgaon prompting police to fire tear gas to disperse them.
Agitated truckers and their helpers hurling brickbats were seen to fight pitched battles with the law enforces during the Dhaka North City Corporation’s drive to evict the illegal truck terminal to ease traffic congestion in the area.
More than a dozen people including truckers, their helpers, policemen and journalists were reportedly injured in the clashes which lasted for several hours.
Dhaka North City Corporation’s Annisul Huq had earlier issued an ultimatum till Nov. 27 to the truckers to clear the illegal infrastructures from the terminal.  Enditem
