Bangladesh building fire doused, three media suspend operations

DHAKA, Oct. 31 (NsNewswire) — A devastating fire broke out at a high rise building in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar area Friday morning, forcing three news media outlets to halt operations.

No casualties were reported.

The BSEC building caught fire at around 11:45 a.m. local time, forcing two private television news channels — NTV and RTV and the online section of the Bengali daily Amardesh to suspend operations.

The cause of the fire is not know immediately.

Sources said the fire originated on the building’s 10th Floor which is the office of the Bengali newspaper — Amardesh.

The 11th story building also houses dozens of offices including private tv news channels –RTV and NTV.

Nearly one and a half hour after the fire originated, Fire Department Operations Director Major Mohammad Mahbub told journalists that the blaze has come under control.

A fire in February, 2007 also devastated the BSEC building. At least four people were dead and some 36 others injured in the 2007 fire incident.
