Fuel Relief for the Vulnerable: How Pakistan Softening a Global Oil Price Shock

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched the Prime Minister’s Special Relief Scheme to provide targeted fuel relief to vulnerable citizens, as rising global oil prices and Middle East instability strain household budgets.
The country’s Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik said reportedly on Sunday that over nine million citizens are benefiting from the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Scheme.
Addressing a public gathering in Lahore, he said the government is making every possible effort to protect the people, particularly vulnerable segments, from the economic impact of rising petroleum prices.
He said since the outbreak of the war, the government had not tried to pass the entire burden on to the people and had increased petroleum prices only to the extent necessitated by the prevailing situation.
The Minister said the state had a responsibility to support weaker segments of society in difficult times and would not leave them alone.
Under the scheme, motorcycle, rickshaw and Qingqi users receive Rs. 500 weekly relief, while owners of cars up to 800cc receive Rs. 100 per litre relief on up to 10 litres every 10 days, bringing fuel costs closer to pre-war levels.
Pakistani People have reportedly hailed the initiative for its ease, transparency and direct delivery of relief, supported by SMS registration, digital verification and fuel tokens.
The initiative illustrates how technology, transparency, and responsive government can bring fast relief to workers and lower-income households during a global fuel-price shock.
