Mobile network gets disrupted due to electricity outages after storms”

DHAKA, April 8 (NsNewsWire) — The power outage situation has become severe across the country due to recent weather conditions impacting the countrywide mobile network. Once sites are down, it takes hours for power supply to these sites to be re-established, resulting in disrupted mobile services.
We have observed that the commercial power supply is switched off before a storm hits and it takes hours to be restored. Sometimes the power authorities take nearly 20 hours to restore power despite of their best effort. Though Mobile Network Operators’ (MNO) have power backup systems in place, they are only able to keep network sites up for around 8 hours and after that there is complete site outage in some areas.
On Saturday’s storm, it was observed that nearly 50% of all network sites in Bangladesh were left without commercial power. Now after more than 12 hours since the storm, nearly 35% of sites still have no commercial power, leading to a complete outage of nearly 15% of total sites in the country.
In terms of numbers, around 18,000 (50% of all sites) of all operators had no commercial power after yesterday’s storm. By 7am Sunday, around 10,000 sites were without power, however, the numbers improved to around 6000 sites without commercial power by 10am.

In these circumstances, AMTOB requests the concern authorities to take necessary measures to ease mobile subscriber suffering due to prolonged power outages. Press release
