Violent brawl likely between Bangladesh ruling, opposition parties over elections

DHAKA,  Jan. 1 (NsNewsWire) — Bangladeshi ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has tabled a seven-point proposal to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasian’s government for an immediate “inclusive general elections” under a non-party caretaker government.

Khaleda Zia, also chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party ( BNP), at a press briefing in capital Dhaka on Wednesday night unveiled the proposals, reports Xinhua.

Khaleda alleged that Hasina’s ruling Bangladesh Awami League ( AL) has broken its promise of arranging early elections and also ignored the repeated requests of the international community.

BNP, which has no representation in the current parliament as it boycotted the Jan. 5 parliament elections in 2014, reiterated its vow to unseat Hasina’s government with movement.

Khaleda Zia announced a mass rally in Dhaka and across the nation on Jan. 5, the day which ruling party has decided to observe as “Victory Day of Democracy”.

Ruling party has ruled out the demand of holding immediate fresh elections.

AL spokesman Syed Ashraful Islam  had earlier categorically said the present government will stay in power till Jan. 28 of 2019.

“We’re voted to remain in power for five years and the next elections will be held within 90 days as per the constitution before January 28 of 2019,” he said.
