Wi-Fi service in whole BUET campus first time in Bangladesh

For the very first time in Bangladesh, Wi-Fi service will be provided in the whole campus of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The service is offered by Base Technologies in association with Institute of Information and Communication Technology (IICT).

The service will be officially launched in January and the registered students can enjoy hi speed internet (at least 512 kbps) from February onwards. According to the sources, telecom service provider, Base Technologies, will give the wireless internet service in different places of the campus that include BUET administrative building, Cafetaria, Library, Students’ Hall, Faculty residence and all the corners of the campus. Primarily a test experiment will be done this month comprising site survey, coverage plan/radio-frequency plan, hardware installation and software installation. After the trial and approval Wi-fi will go for the soft launch in January. All the students, teachers, officers and staffs can enjoy the service from February.

Although there are Wi-fi system in several universities of the country unplanned installation process and using technique keeps the service out of order. Mostly it is seen, there is a single ID and password for all the students. That causes the people outside the campus to use the internet and thus students do not get the desired bandwith. Even there are several universities where the wi-fi is provided in certain areas, not in the whole campus. In order to overcome such problems Base technologies will install the maximum internet speed possible, said Base technologies chief technical officer Moinul Hossain Bhuiyan. He also added, each student will be given individual ID and password to access wi-fi which disallow outsiders to use the internet. Moreover, all the information of the users will be stored in the data centre confidentially and can be used by the user only if he/she login with his/her Id and password.

According to the chief marketing officer of Base technologies, though minimum 512 kbps speed is considered standard, the management will determine the amount of bandwith to be used in the campus. Those who need better internet speed will be given increased speed via IICT. Base technologies is not providing the service to make a profit, he added, and with an experienced technical and sales team the project is provided with 40 per cent discount. Base technologies will provide uninterrupted wi-fi service for the next three years. In case of any failure 24/7 service is assured.
