Age is no barrier for this volunteer

Gold Coast, Jan. 18 (NsNewsWire) — Don Robertson thought he was done with volunteering after 30 years, but when Gold Coast was announced as the next Commonwealth Games host he knew he had to come out of retirement, even if he was going to be 93.

No stranger to elite sporting events, Robertson has been a starter for swimming at numerous Australian Championships and the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games.

At 57 years of age, Robertson made the hard decision to retire from volunteering but the opportunity to volunteer at another Games was too hard to pass up, even if he was ‘old’.

“I’d been starting all Australian championships all round, every state, for 30 years,” Robertson told GC2018.com.

“After the ‘82 Games I’d been at it over 30 years, I retired.

“When on television it was announced the Gold Coast got the 2018 Games, my first thought was great, you’re going to have to volunteer.

“Then I sat down and thought, you silly old bugger, you’ll be 93 before that happens.

“But I did anyhow.”
